Statement of Intension

RATIONALE
Physics in VR games plays an important role to make the player more immersive (most of them are about simulating certain kind of experience). However, its is rarely used as a main mechanic to enhance the gameplay. In this case, I would like to make a VR game which utilize physics to do puzzle-solving. Here are some inquires that I think worth to explore during the project.

  1. How can real world physics be implemented into VR to enhance the gameplay?

(2) How to create a VR game with an interesting story?

CONTEXT
Half Life Alex-sets an example for the VR game industry, with realistic graphic and interesting gameplay, it really makes the player fell like being a part of the world.
With great level design, players are able to utilize the environment and solve interesting puzzles. What’s more, besides firing weapons like other FPS games, the game requires the player to physically dodge behind the walls and obstacles, which takes the gameplay to the next level. Begin able to rotate and grab and objects also offer unique puzzle solving ideas.

Antman-shows how daily surroundings can be entirely different when view from a different angle, the concept of body size transformation is interesting.

Grounded-a multiplayer adventure PC game which let player explore the nature, but with a shrunk body size.

METHOD

Week 1-5
Doing research on related games & concepts
Testing & Coding the Physics System in Unreal Engine( to determine which idea is doable)
Level Design(Level Blockout)

Week 6-12
Modeling
Programming the level(putting interactable objects together)

The protagonist wakes up from a coma and found himself being super small. As the protagonist,
player needs to overcome different obstacles caused by his body size and gather resources to return to his normal state.
The style of the game would be low-poly with simplistic color and texture (grey box level design). I'll focus more on creating an interesting gameplay which utilize the in-game physics.
I will also avoid using UI to make the game more immersive.

OUTCOME
A PC VR adventure game with realistic physics and an interesting story.

Below are several physics interactions which I want to include in the final outcome.

Destructible Objects

To sort of continue my research in studio 1 (which is about destruction system), I found it interesting to implement this feature into my studio 2 assignment. This allows the player to break some container in order to receive the item inside.

Climbing

As a small character, being able to climb on objects is a must.

Grabbing/Rotating/Throwing

Basic VR interactions

Opening Drawers/Desks/Shelves

This allows player to receive items from certain locations.
