Play and Sound- Week7

Theme

In response to the theme of " Play and Sound ", I made a video of me singing jingle bells, with me again, arranging the instruments on the side. The ‘Instruments’ I played come from my everyday life, such as oats in a plastic bag, glass containers for tomato sauce, a propolis capsule bottle, an iron straw and a glass jug for sesame oil. Through the action of sing and accompanying, I have experimented with different sounds with items that don’t usually seem as instruments and reflected the theme of play by making a unique song.

Method

I started with planning what the song I am going to make. Regarding the universality, and the Christmas is coming, I choose the song Jingle Bells to develop. Then I attempted to choose what items I will use, the ideal candidates would have the trait of making loud sounds, accessible, and covered a variety of timbre. Considered all the factors, I chose oats in a plastic bag, glass containers for tomato sauce, a propolis capsule bottle, an iron straw and a glass jug for sesame oil to build the accompaniment. I recorded two versions, one played continuously and the other played short notes. Then edit it in the premiere according to the melody requirements. With my singing clips, they compose a final composition.

Context

Robson(2001) reviews a number of projects in his research that explore building electronic musical things, interfaces and objects designed to be used and enjoyed by anybody but in particular those who do not see themselves as naturally musical. He reflects that the most immediate conclusion from the work is that the space being explored creating simple collaborative objects for those who feel musically inexperienced is very rich. I also believe that playing instruments that are not considered to be musical instruments allows people who know musical instruments to enjoy playing an instrument as well and spreads that joy to others.

Reflection

The hardest part for me is to come up with the idea. Initially, I made a doodle jump game based on the theme of sound. However, after receiving feedback from Uyen, I found the sound elements in the game are not enough to reflect the theme, so I altered it into an acapella-like form of play. This playing method inspired me to make non-animation-related works. In the past, I usually try my best to develop animation techniques, but through this practice, I found that making creative videos is also fun and I can learn a lot from it. Most important of all, the outcome can achieve another sense of aesthetics and practice. In the future, I am looking forward to combining recording and animation in my field of practice.
