Theme

Play and Body-growing pains

Method

I put several sticky notes on the wall and write the word ‘taller’ on the sticky note higher than my viewpoint. For the sticky notes which are located lower than my viewpoint I write ‘shorter’. While doing it , I tried not bending my legs, so I have bend over or stand on my toes when writing those words.  As expected, the handwriting on the sticky notes started to get messier and messier when the writing location get s too high or too low. It’s interesting to see how those letters is written and where they locates on every sticky notes

Context

The idea  is inspired from an artist ‘Matthew Barney’. His works explore connections among geography, biology, geology and mythology as well as themes of conflict and failure. In one of his work ‘Drawing restraint’ Barney attempts to mark the ceiling and the walls while bouncing on a tilted trampoline or tethered at the thighs with bungee cords. He pointed out art making is just like athletes training,  which the development of form occurs through resistance. Another idea that inspired this work is my dad, he used to put rulers on the corner to measure and record my height when I grow up. Sticky notes are also often used to record and remember something happens in people's life.

This week’s response is related to Constructive Play. Constructive play is when children use materials to create or build something. It‘s organized and focused on a goal. my weekly response, I uses sticky notes and pens to present the idea of me growing up. I experienced with the materials and create something different which conveys a new idea. I also simulated the growing pain in my leg by avoid stretching  my legs.

Reflection

When I notice the theme for this week is play and body, it reminds me of those performance art which is aimed for conveying serious topics or creating different kinds of weird ideas. However, after watching videos from previous students, I  think I should make my response less serious and more interesting.

1.I was going to create a Draw and Guess’ game in an  online environment which participants can draw things on the ceiling and let other people guess the drawings, but after hearing the feedback,  I realize it would be 1.too difficult for them to do that in VR. 2. The drawing would be impossible to recognize 3. There are still some bugs which need to be fixed.4. Not everyone has a space to jump in real life. Therefore, I gave up the idea and started a new one.(there are some screenshots below)

2.When it comes to reviewing my second (actual) response, Ithink the camera is a little bit shaky and some part in the video is out of focus. I did not notice that because I was viewing the video on a small screen. The most annoying part of making the video is that those sticky notes keep felling of the wall, my clothes was rubbing those stickers while I was trying to reach for a higher area. Overall, using Symbolism to present an idea can be very interesting and offers an extra meaning to the work.
