Short animation on a plate with a duck.

In response to the theme of Observation (staring intensive at an object and make an impression afterwards), I made a traditional flip book animation featuring a plate with a duck on it. The duck comes to life, and nibbles away at a piece of toast that was to be placed on the plate. I have used some common household materials such as white printing paper, a clip, and a black sharpie.

By making this short animation where an inanimate design comes to life, I seek to challenge the strangeness of decorating plates with commonly seen animals. People are used to seeing such animals (like ducks) in the wild, there is nothing special about them. But when they are illustrated on a plate, the plate suddenly appears elegant, full of design, they also become expensive and sought after.

Similar work has been produced by Julian Frost, whose work ‘Dumb ways to die’ also expresses realistic object in a cute animation. Although the style of the clip appears quite child-like and cartoon-y, it is depicting very realistic and believable events. It is an interesting contrast to my work where the idea of an realistic illustration moving around in an animation is deemed unrealistic.
