In response to this week’s theme of observation, I used Aseprite to create a 2D pixel illustration of a dark ritual ceremony inspired from my walk at my local natural reserve.

By combining various elements from the park that I observed, such as the dead animal skull on a stick, a large oddly shaped log that reminded me of a mystical animal carcass, some stone sculptures, and the fact that this place is a natural habitat for a rare reptile species, I was able to show how I imagined this place would look like in a fictional setting. Though surrounded by residential buildings, a freeway and a train station, this place is actually very quiet, giving it an almost mystical atmosphere. In my creation, I expanded on the mystical element of this place, which led me to the dark ritual ceremony concept.

Similar themes are present in Chris Renaud’s movie The Secret Life of Pets, which explores this theme by showing the life and adventures of different pets when their human companions are not around (The Secret Life of Pets, 2016).
