Play and Forces
Method

I recorded  different  noises coming out of my laptop. I played with the noise by opening different programs while recording -I don’t know when and how loud the noise will become after opening those programs. I combined those audio clips with video clips. Usually, the noise level is based on how busy the processor is. However, In this video, the noise is  a symbol of my emotion. When I get annoyed by something, the volume goes up and the noise become louder. For example, I use Duolingo to practice other languages everyday, and sometimes it can get annoying when I answer the question wrong. When I listen to the music , I feel calm, therefore there's little to no noise. When I play games like Elden Ring , I get  frustrated and anxious when my character almost died. The volume changes as the health changes. The volume becomes much lower when the boss is defeated.

Context

The idea comes from the project “Glassbrain Flythrough 2015’  Which  was   visualization built by the Neuroscape Lab at the University of California, San Francisco. The video is depicting electrical activity in the brain. The 3D model of the brain seen in the visualization is derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data.In this video, the electricity in people's brain was visualized though a video. The concept  of turning frustration level into soundwave is Reification, to consider or represent (something abstract) as a material or concrete thing. In this work, I convert the sound into my frustration, I used the noise to visualize my frustration

My weekly response contains a part of constructive play. Constructive play is an organized form of play that is, in many ways, goal oriented and thoughtful. People who are engaged in constructive play use materials to create something,  In my example, I found the relation between sound and my frustration and create an interesting(or confusing) short video.

Reflection

In this work, I created  several scenarios which could be unusual to others, especially for people who don’t understand the concept. For example, when typing in Word, the volume became very loud, which subverts people’s expectations.I can understand this response can be quite unconventional and people might think this is less of a physic- based response, since the part which involves with ‘playing with the randomness of the force’ is the noise and it does not directly affect objects. I also think that the theme of transformation of forces can be more natural and with less editing(the only method is to putting a machine on my head)
