Rough abstract for my Research Proposal

The goal of this research proposal is to analyze key research points directed towards independent animators in the hope that it will allow them to leverage the most of their limited resources in time and budget (softwares, sound library and lack of staff to distribute the work or brainstorm ideas). Dan Torre shared his knowledge of splitting the animation process into 3 phases: the Construction Phase, Animative-State, and Presentation Phase. Through my research proposal, I want to postulate the idea of taking these phases and applying them cognitively into the creative mind, wherein it will allow the animators to use the most out of their given circumstance and create their own unique way of presenting their idea.

It will analyze the question of “How can independent animators take the Construction phase, Animative-State phase and the Presentation phase of 2D animation and redefine it so that it applies to their way of thinking rather than making, to have a more pragmatic approach to animation and in return produce a more unique product?”

This research paper will help expand on this way of thinking where it will allow other animators to explore different opportunities to express themselves using 2D animation. 2D animation was specifically chosen as the main choice of medium as it removes the restriction of topology and rigging offered by 3D and in return gives the creators more liberty in the product of their work. Understanding and applying this knowledge into 2D first would allow the creators to later adapt it to other mediums if needed.

My artefacts of choice to help visualize this idea were two works of mine, one from Studio 1 and the other from Studio 3 which I am currently working on. My studio 1 work didn’t have the application of this knowledge and therefore the work wasn’t very interesting or intriguing. My studio 3 work at least takes a bolder risk with visual storytelling by leveraging the most out of the 2D medium. The only thing that changed between these two works was my approach towards the animation. My animation style itself has remained more or less the same. But because I’ve changed the way of thinking in regards to the way of making, I was able to produce a more distinguished product.
