Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

For this project I paired up with Rui, a fellow student I had never spoken with before!

Questions about his interests produced some surprises – Rui emerged as competitive, collaborative, physically active and interested in challenges so little surprise that he plays basketball. With no time to research his stated interests (Super Mario, Japanese manga series, Naruto and VR shooting games) my own understanding of basketball gave me a start into designing a project for him.

The first 5 “radical” approaches (Ideate) only produced soft imitations of a basketball game (street version etc.). After seeking feedback I learnt that he collects objects/statuettes with a space theme. This new finding started allowed me to move away from the basketball-based approach that was proving inhibitive.

The project moved to a VR game (Iterate) that required the discovery of specific and increasingly complex body movements to acquire the parts he would need to create a fight-based avatar. Construction with the modelling materials (Build Response) in the classroom guided the project to this result.

The model itself took a few iterations to create something aggressive enough.

I have no experience with VR or conflict-based games so this outcome was QUITE a surprise. Rui laughed so I think he liked it well enough!
